Glencairn on Sunday
This weekend I went to Glencairn with Ambassadorial Scholar Coordinator extrordinaire Trevor Wilkins. Glencairn is a tract of land owned by my host Rotary Club, the Mother Club, bequeathed for the purposes of youth development. Currently there are youth camp facilties that are used by various groups. Trevor and I went to take pictures of the land because part of the property will be used for affordable senior housing, and the profits will go right back into sustaining and improving the youth intiatives.
We great fun and I met lots of people who were there for the camp that was currently inhabiting the site. I talked with some teenage girls for a bit, and then two young boys, John and Cameron told me about a Baboon that had invaded the campsite the day before. Both, enthusiastic storytellers, I heard marvelous yarns from these two articulate youngsters about betting on the South Africa vs. Australia cricket match for a prize of biltong (the South African version of beef jerky), their trips to America, who in their family has stitches, and experiences of being bitten by snakes. I later spoke to an eight year old named Jaymo, who made me spell his name verbally to get it right. We beat it on a conga drum for a while, talking about whoopee cushions, and laughing it up.
I also managed to take a few pictures, of the day, but Trevor, being the true professional, took far better shots. Take a look at his fine work, and you'll see pictures of me with my raconteurs for the day.
Trevor and I departed for the camp, and I have to say that reflecting up on it all, the scenery here never gets old. To and from, the drives were spectacular, taking in views of the city below, jagged peaks all around, and coastlines of brillant blue. And near the Glencairn property the slopes of the mountain are dotted with quaint houses adorned with gabled roofs and a broad spectrum of bold and fanciful colors. We stopped at a petrol station for a cooldrink (known in the states as a soft drink) and I chose a giant glass bottle of fizzy ginger beer. A nice refreshingly sweet end to an excellent excursion.
